Registration for STUDENTS 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM
*No student will be allowed to register before 8:30 AM or after 11:00 AM. Students will not be able to register unless their band director has registered and is present.
“Day-of” Student Registration Procedures
• Registration will begin at 8:30 AM and end at 11:30 AM.
• Any student auditioning must remain on campus from registration until his or her audition is complete unless excused in advance by the Audition Chair.
• Once registration opens, students should report to the registration table for their instruments. For example, flutists should report to the flute table, clarinetists to the clarinet table and so on. Each student will be assigned an audition number on a first-come, first-served basis. The first flute player to register will audition first, the second player to register will audition second and so on.
• Each student will be given a card or other marker indicating their audition number. Students MUST keep this card and present it when they audition.
• After registering, students should report to the assigned warm-up area for their instrument.
• Students should remain in their warm-up areas unless traveling to the bathroom or cafeteria. Students should NEVER travel to or through audition areas except during their assigned audition time. They should also refrain from loitering around the registration area.
• Should your instrument suffer a mechanical breakdown while in the warm-up area, report to the Director’s Meeting Room (normally the Media Center) and ask for the Auditions Chair or instrument repairman. We will make every effort to repair your instrument. The Auditions Chair has the authority to change your audition number should a repair cause you to miss your original audition number due to instrument malfunction.
Student Audition Procedures
• Students will be called to audition in group of five to ten. For example, an announcer will call for
“Flutes one through ten”. Students should report to the podium or other assigned area when their number has been called. Any student who fails to report when called may forfeit their audition.
• For nearly all instruments, there are three separate judging rooms: Scales, Solo and Sight- Reading. Without exception, students will perform their audition requirements in that order. Percussion and string bass auditions are normally held in one room each.
• Each student should carefully follow the instructions of the runner for his or her group. Be sure you have your registration card so the runner can match your audition number to your judging sheet.
• The judges will face away from students at all times except in string bass and percussion rooms. The judges should not speak to you except as indicated below.
• In the event of an instrument breakdown, report the problem to the runner immediately. Your audition may be halted until a repair can be made.
SCALE ROOM
• High school students cannot take ANY paperwork into the scale room.
• Middle school students CAN take a scale sheet or other materials into the scale room.
• The order of scales in concert and transposed pitch and articulation for each scale will be listed on a sheet on the music stand.
• Each student MUST play the scales in the order and articulation listed or receive a scoring penalty.
• A judge will direct the student when to begin playing. The student may only play the first note of the first scale or a long tone as a warm-up.
• High school students must play all scales (major and chromatic) within three minutes. If you go over time, a judge will instruct you to stop playing.
• Middle school students must play all scales (major and chromatic) within three minutes and thirty seconds. If you go over time, a judge will instruct you to stop playing.
• Any scale played with incorrect articulation (tongued instead of slurred, for example) will receive a one-point deduction.
• When you are finished playing your scales, exit the room. Wait in the hallway until instructed to move to the next room by the runner.
SOLO ROOM
• All students can take any paperwork they wish into the solo room.
• You must perform from an original copy of the solo.
• A copy of the solo will be on the music stand. Check this music carefully for cuts. Play ONLY the section indicated. If you are unclear about what to play, you may ask the runner for clarification.
• A judge will direct the student when to begin playing.
• When you are finished playing your solo, pick up your music and exit the room. Do not take the copy of music from the music stand. Wait in the hallway until instructed to move to the next room by the runner.
SIGHT-READING ROOM
• All students can take any paperwork they wish into the solo room.
• The sight-reading music will be on the music stand. It may or may not be face-up when you enter the room.
• Follow the judge’s instructions about when to begin and how long you have to preview the music.
• A judge will direct you when to begin playing.
• When you are finished playing your sight-reading, exit the room. Do not take the sight-reading from the music stand. Wait in the hallway until instructed to move on by the runner.
AFTER YOUR AUDITION
• Return to your warm-up area.
• Refrain from congregating in hallways or other crowded areas after your audition. This can slow the flow of traffic to and from audition rooms.
• Scores will not posted on audition day.
• Scores will be posted on the CDBA website (http://cdba.ncbandmasters.org) within 72 hours of the conclusion of auditions.
• In the event that you need to contact your band director or receive an instrument repair, report to the Director’s Meeting Room (usually the Media Center) and ask for the Auditions Chair. The Auditions Chair can contact your band director or make arrangements for emergency instrument repair.
