October 1st, 2010 by Mrs. Batts

Last Thursday the representative from Carolina Biscuits came out and did a presentation for the students.  We are now selling cakes, microwaveable biscuits, French bread pizzas, cheesecakes, funnel cakes, soft pretzels, cinnamon rolls, and cookie dough.

The sale is going on from September 23 through Friday, October 8th.  When you take orders please collect the money in advance.   Students can turn in any money collected and order forms on practice days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) starting this Tuesday.  Remember students will be earning a portion of the profit to go into their Band Bucks account for our trip to Disney in the spring.

The Biscuit Guy said students who could sell 10 items would receive 1 free item and if they sold 15 items they would get 2 free items.

The orders will be in on the week of the October 18th.  On the day of pick up families will have to come in and pick up their orders.  If you are unable to give the product out that day you must keep the items refrigerated. When the orders are turned in we will have a definite date the merchandise will be delivered.

Duty Descriptions

Uniforms/Water/ Supervise:

Before Competition: Arrive at 11am. While students are arriving and going to practice fill the cooler with water bottles and fruit cups.  We may need to use more than one cooler.  Once that is finished go over the check list of items needed to be brought to the competition and put it at the doors of the entrance to the school.  Make sure we grab the plums (feathers), gauntlets (sleeves), extra marching shoes, extra hats, socks, and gloves.  When the trailer arrives we can go ahead and collect the items and load them from there.  When students arrive back to the Band Room after practice go the uniform closet help hand out uniforms bags and hats.  Since we are not performing as soon as we get all students need to do is load their informs on the trailer by section.  Students should change into whatever bottoms they will wear under their uniform and their Elements Show Shirt.  Students should also load their own instrument on the trailer.  Make sure they put their instrument on the trailer because sometimes the trailer is not parked with the bus.

Leave for competition: We will leave for the competition and when we arrive students will exit the bus, they need to bring their personal belongings because the bus may not be parked close to the stadium.  We will walk to the stadium in two lines and sit together in a group.  Students are not allowed to leave during a performance or talk loudly.  Also students should not talk on their cell phones during a performance.  After the 1A bands perform we will exit the stadium as a group and go back to the trailer to get uniforms and go to get changed in the changing areas.  Students will split up into boy and girl groups.

When students arrive back with their uniforms on please check to make sure students are wearing long black socks, black marching shoes, have black gloves, jackets are zipped up and pinned closed at the top, they have the white collars on, they have the gauntlets (sleeves) on, they have their hat (names are on the inside of the hats), and the hat has a plum (feather).

During warm up and performance: Stay with the band and help if there is any dilemmas (usually not; just in case).

After Performance:  Students will exit the stadium and return to the trailer. Students should put their instrument in case and load it back on the trailer.  Students will divide again into boy and girl groups and get changed back into their jeans and Elements show shirt. Students should also put their uniform back on the trailer.  Once everyone has completed this task we will march back to the stadium in two lines.

During the Competition: Supervise the students making sure they are quite and respectful while other bands are performing. The band will sit together in one of the sections of the Stadium.  Students are not allowed to leave during a performance or talk loudly.  Also students should not talk on their cell phones during a performance.

Arrive back at school: ALL students should help unload the trailer. When we come back inside one person should stand at the door of the uniform closet and check students bags to make sure the uniforms are hung up properly. Also make sure students pick up all trash in the bus and the band room.  All chairs and music stands should be put away.

Props/Pit Instruments/ Load Trailer:

Before Competition: Arrive at 11:15am.  Go over checklist and make sure all items are outside the main entrance so they can be loaded on the trailer.  We can use the carts to bring them into the trailer.  Remember that the students are practicing and the will be 2 large tubas and marching percussion so you may want to wait to load these items first.  The guard should load their flags.  One person should be in charge of taking the podium.  Two or more people may be needed to take the backdrop. The rest need to take care of the pit instruments.

Performance: DO NO STEP INSIDE THE FIELD LINES (sidelines) UNTIL THE BAND DOES.  We will get a timing penalty if we enter the field before we are told to do so. One person should set up the Podium and Podium skirt.  Also the mallet instruments (xylophone and bells with table) will be set up on the side line beside the podium.  Two people are needed for the backdrop.  The backdrop should be assembled on the track while the band is marching to the field.  When the band marches on the field carry the backdrop from the 30 yard line to the back hash of the 50 yard line and set it up there.  Two or more people (plus the Percussion Instructors and Pit Players) are needed to set up the pit percussion and drum line stands.  They should be set up according to the diagram that Mr. Batts has.  After the band performs quickly take items off the field and disassemble and place back in the carts.

After the performance: Students will come back to the trailer.  First they should put instruments back in their cases then get their uniform bag to go get changed.  While they are changing load instruments back on the trailer.  When student return with their bags they should place them on the trailer rack.

Arrive Back at school: Unload trailer and make sure students bring the instruments and uniforms back into the band room.

We have rescheduled the banquet for Monday, Jan 28 at 6:00 in the school cafeteria.

We hope that this unavoidable change doesn’t keep anyone from coming next week.  We’ll see you then.

By the way, Band Members – be sure to put what you are bringing on the sign-up sheet that is on the door of the band room.
